Stackley named SC Shrine Bowl coach

SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) -- Nelson Smith of Garner High will coach the North Carolina team while Ray Stackley of Stratford will coach the South Carolina team in next year's Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas.

Athletic director Ron Long of the Shrine Bowl announced the coaching staff for both teams Thursday. The all-star game between the top senior prep players from North and South Carolina takes place Dec. 15 at Wofford College's Gibbs Stadium in Spartanburg.

Joining Smith on the Tar Heels staff are West Forsyth's Adrian Snow, Douglas Byrd's Russell Stone, Davie County's Doug Illing, Hendersonville's B.J. Laughter, East Lincoln's Mike Byus and Walter Williams' Davis Grant.

On Stackley's Sandlappers staff are Airport's Kirk Burnett, Blue Ridge's Wade Cooper, Christ Church's Don Frost, Buford's Mile Wells, Newberry's Bill Harvey and Stratford's Tony Smith.
