CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- In a formal letter addressed to SLED chief Mark Keel, Charleston County sheriff Al Cannon on Thursday asked SLED to investigate all aspects of a recent high speed chase in which the sheriff admitted to acting out of character.

"Because I actually acted in the McManus pursuit, I do not believe that my agency has the capability of conducting an unbiased internal affairs investigation which would normally ensue following an incident such as this," Sheriff Cannon wrote.

Cannon, along with other officers, fired their weapons at the vehicle of Timothy Shawn McManus in attempt to blow out his tires. Once the vehicle came to a complete stop, officers pulled McManus out of the vehicle. The Sheriff's Office has shared video of the arrest -- video that has sparked debate about the use of force against McManus.

Sheriff Cannon, in a press conference on February 1, admitted to slapping McManus while he was handcuffed in the back of a deputy's car.
