MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (WCIV) -- College and high school basketball both have weeks set aside for promoting cancer awareness. So why not have one for local recreation departments?
Saturday Mount Pleasant's fundamental league coordinator Shelli Davis asked those participating in youth basketball to come decked out in pink in a show of support.
The basketball world in college recognizes it, high school recognizes it. So, we voted to bring it to recreation as well," Davis said.
"It's great. We can't do enough for our community to promote awareness, not only of breast cancer but other cancers and diseases that affect our community day and night. It's great to see these kids playing and being a part of it too."
Coaches were asked to dress in coat and tie and players in pink. Davis said it was all done in honor of all who have fought breast cancer, but especially coach Jimmy Valvano.
Valvano, who won the 1983 NCAA Basketball Championship while coaching at N.C. State is known for a 1993 ESPY Awards speech given weeks before he died of cancer. In the speech, he announced the creation of The V Foundation for Cancer Research.
The Mount Pleasant recreation department hopes to promote cancer awareness with each sport offered this year.
