CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- Classes at a First Baptist Church school building are canceled for Monday after Charleston firefighters responded to a fire at the location on Water Street in downtown Charleston.

The call came in at 5:29 p.m. Crews saw heavy smoke coming from the second and third floors.

The affected building is a three story wood frame home converted to a school building by First Baptist Church.

Charleston Fire Department spokesman Mark Ruppel said the fire was originally believed to be out, but as crews stayed on the scene to make sure the fire hadn't extended into the walls, they found out flames had gotten between the walls and spread to other areas.

Crews scrambled to fight the fire on the first and second floors and continued to work hot spots until the blaze was brought under control.

"It's an older structure. It's a wood-framed structure. So, any fire in the walls would be extremely dangerous," Ruppel said. "Crews have thermal imaging cameras, so they'll go through the entire building and search for any hot spots. They'll also, if need be, break down the wall to get to the fire."

Officials with the school said classes are canceled on Monday due to the fire.

The North Charleston Fire Department, St. Andrews Fire Department, Charleston County EMS and City of Charleston Police Department all assisted the Charleston Fire Department. No injuries were reported.

A portion of Meeting Street was closed down while fire crews worked the scene.
