MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (WCIV)-- A teaching assistant from Cayce, South Carolina is facing charges after being accused of having sex with an underage girl.

According to a police report obtained Monday, the incident happened Friday night at the Quality Inn in Mount Pleasant. Officers responded to the hotel on Sunday to investigate a complaint of possible criminal sexual conduct with a minor.

Police were informed the group was in Charleston for the Special Olympics, and the alleged victim was a participant.

The mother of the alleged victim told officers her daughter said she had sex with Cornelius Davis, 29, who was acting as counselor for the Special Olympics.

According to the police report, Davis told a female teacher around 10 p.m. on Friday that he "needed to take the victim to see her mother at a different hotel."

The victim reportedly did not return to the room until 2:30 a.m., and told the teacher she had been walking around the hotel.

At around 11:00 Saturday morning, the teacher was reportedly approached by one of the victim's classmates who told her the victim had been in Mr. Davis' room having sex the night before.

The police report states the victim at first denied the accusations, but later said they were true after explicit text messages were found on her phone and were believed to be between herself and Davis.

The victim also said Davis had sex with her the night before in Cayce.

Published reports say Davis is a teaching assistant at Brookland Cayce High School and a volunteer basketball coach.

"He volunteered with Special Olympics starting in 2008. State and national background checks were clean," state director of the Special Olympics Barry Coats said Monday.

Davis has reportedly been placed on administrative leave during the investigation.

The victim was taken to MUSC to be examined.
