MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (WCIV) -- A winning lottery ticket worth $250,000 has been claimed by a man from Mount Pleasant.
The ticket was sold at the Kangaroo Express on Bessemer Road. The store will receive a commission of $2,500 for selling the ticket.
The winner says he saw his winning numbers while sipping his morning coffee. When he told his wife they were a quarter of a million dollars richer, he says she thought he was kidding.
He assured her the numbers on his ticket matched the ones on the Lottery's website: 16, 29, 48, 52 and 54.
"I never pick my own numbers, because I don't have any lucky numbers," he said waiting for the check in Columbia. "Maybe I'll write these down."
While his ticket for the March 2 drawing missed the jackpot by one number, he still feels fortunate.
"My only regret is that I didn't spend the extra dollar for the multiplier," he said in a statement released by the South Carolina Education Lottery.
If he had bought the multiplier, his winnings would have totaled a million dollars.
The couple says they are putting the winnings away for retirement.
