CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) – A doggie pageant aims to find the most beautiful bulldog in the lowcountry.
The 2nd Annual Citadel Beautiful Bulldog Contest is scheduled for March 17th at the football stadium. The contest will kick off at 11 a.m. before the Citadel spring football game that afternoon.
Organizers say 54 dogs competed last year but they hope to get at least 60 participants this year. Bulldogs from across the state have already registered and they even even a few from out of state.
"It's interesting because we started the event as a local event but now we're seeing we have bulldogs coming from all over," said Kathleen Cartland, owner of the current title holder.
"We have dogs, of course, within the state but we have 2 coming from Ohio, so maybe it will grow geographically."
The contestants will face off in 6 different categories – everything from best smile to best tail wagger and best costume.
The public is invited to the event. A five dollar donation will be accepted at the gate and will go toward the Citadel football association.
