CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- Nineteen-year-old Shawn Lindsey of Summerville was walking home Wednesday night from church when he walked into a situation he says felt like a horror film.

"Next thing I know there is a woman in front of me with blood on her face, and she is screaming, and I can't hear a word. So, I take my headphones out, and she's screaming 'Help me! Help me! He hit me! I'm bleeding!'" Lindsey said. "I told my parents that situation could have ended up a lot worse. I thank God that it didn't, but I was scared."

Police say 30-year-old Shemaiah Yates was beaten on the Sawmill Branch Trail in Summerville by her homeless boyfriend, Thomas Miller. Police say Miller repeatedly punched Yates in the face.

"She had been hit hard multiple times. She's had blood coming out of her nose, blood coming out of her mouth. It looked like she lost a couple teeth," Lindsey said.

Yates has undergone surgery and is in fair condition at Summerville Medical Center as of Saturday night.

Officials arrested Miller and charged him with second degree assault and battery. Miller went through bond court Friday morning, and was given a $20,000 surety bond.

"At first it felt like a horror film, but then it felt like God had placed me in a situation and told me what I had to do," Lindsey said.

Lindsey ran after Yates to help her. He immediately called 911 and waited with her until an ambulance came and took her away to Summerville Medical Center.

Lindsey sees his being at the right place at the right time as an answered prayer.

"Fact that I was walking home and a situation like that unfolded in front of me and was allowing me to help somebody -- I knew God was answering my prayers. God was talking to me there, and I knew what God wanted me to do. So, I went and did it."
