CHARLESTON, S. C. (WCIV) -- First lady Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden's nationwide effort to support veterans returning from active duty has joined forces with MUSC's school of medicine.

Aptly dubbed "Joining Forces," the initiative brings together medical schools, employers and government agencies to help meet the growing and unique health needs of U.S. veterans, especially those who suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

MUSC's support will further cutting edge research and therapies like so-called "virtual reality" treatments.

"The idea is to continue to expose the patient to those things that traumatized them either directly or at least creates that environment where the trauma took place," said Tom Robinson, an administrator from the institute of psychiatry.

Those who work closely with PTSD patients at MUSC are optimistic about the exposure that will come with being a part of Joining Forces.

"It has really gotten people excited in terms of doing both outstanding research work and some also really wonderful treatment protocols that they are able to do to deliver treatment to these individuals, said clinical psychologist Connie Best.

Currently, there is a web-based course that trains therapists in treating PTSD.

MUSC also has plans to work with other universities and state and federal government to create a network of PTSD treatment centers throughout South Carolina.
