CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- With water in his eyes, Bobby Cremins spoke about his decision to retire as the College of Charleston's head basketball coach.

"Being able to come back here, to come back to coaching here at the college has truly been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life," Cremins said. ".. The irony of Greg Marshall to pull a Bobby Cremins still amazes me."

Cremins described mental and physical exhaustion that kept him off the court for the tail end of the season as "unfortunate."

"I didn't like what happened," he said. "I will never know why. Our body sometimes sends us signals that we have to listen to. The silver lining is that my staff, led by Mark Byington, my team, my school, they had my back and they responded in a special way."

Cremins came to the College of Charleston after spending 19 years coaching at Georgia Tech. He is the winningest coach in Georgia Tech's history. He led the Cougars to 20 victories in each of his seasons.

In reference to health issues that kept him off the court, Cremins said his health is good right now, and his only regret is not getting the Cougars back to the NCAA tournament.

College of Charleston President George Benson showed his support via Twitter late Monday night. The tweet read: "My thanks to Bobby Cremins for six memorable years of CofC basketball. We will miss your leadership on and off the court."
