CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- The Gaillard Auditorium downtown is expecting a big makeover this summer.

A big part of that renovation is the green space in front of the building.

Michael Maher, Director of the Charleston Civic Design Center, said the green space will offer a more welcoming spot for community residents to gather.

This Wednesday night, there will be a meeting at the design center to share their updated plan with the public.

"The meeting will update people on the status of the green space and transformation of that open space into something that really helps to advance the activities going on in the Gaillard that really makes them more community friendly," Maher said.

The $142 million project will be a state-of-the-art facility.

The plan is to actually cut out 900 seats from the auditorium to create better acoustics.

They'll also build an ornate atrium and new banquet hall, fit for weddings and corporate events.

Maher said the design process will continue May, and they will break ground in August.
