CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV)-- If you like to run and don't mind mud or a few obstacles, you won't want to miss the Rugged Maniac Adventure Race this Saturday.

"They can expect mud, they can expect a lot of fun, a lot of running, a lot of crazy obstacles and of course at the end, a lot of beer, a lot of food and a lot of festival games," said Rob Dickens, Chief Operating Officer at Rugged Races.

Event organizers have been setting up obstacles, such as climbing walls, mud pits, and a water slide since this past weekend. Boone Hall Plantation is a perfect venue for this adventurous 5K run.

"It's a different diverse of terrain that they can built their obstacle courses on," said Jadie Rayfield, Operations Manager at Boone Hall Plantation.

Erik Hernandez works at Boone Hall and participated in the event last year.

"It was just one of the most challenging things I've ever done and if you are going to come and do it, get ready to get dirty," said Hernandez.

And participants are covered in mud as they get toward the finish line.

"People have been running for 3 miles and so they are very hot, very sweaty, and muddy so by the time they get to this point, finishing off with a nice cool pool of water is a great way to do it," said Dickens.

The event is also a great opportunity for people to come out to Boone Hall.

"It brings diversity to the community and it's a great spectator sport. People can come out on Saturday and hopefully the weather will be great and everybody will enjoy the races and have a fantastic time over here at Boone Hall," said Rayfield.

Online registration is closed, but you can sign up for the race on Saturday.

Runners are encouraged to donate to the Fisher House Foundation, which provides housing to families of veterans while their loved ones have surgery or other medical procedures. The Rugged Maniacs also donates a certain percentage of their proceeds to the foundation.
