CHARLESTON, S. C. (WCIV)- Charleston Mayor Joe Riley is scheduled to announce a wellness initiative Monday.

The rise in the number of people who suffer from obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease has promoted strong and unique measures to get people to make better lifestyle choices.

"Lighten Up, Charleston" will work to unite residents with community organizations, programs and facilities that will be able to support  healthier eating and exercising.

Residents are being challenged to collectively lose 100 thousand pounds.

Mayor Riley will be assisted by community partners Roper St. Francis, MUSC, College of Charleston, Charleston County School District and SC Region 7 DHEC.

The Charleston Maritime Center will host Monday's event that will also include a health fair from 2 p.m.  until 4 p.m. and a fun walk at 3 p.m.
