CHARLESTON, S. C. (WCIV) -- A West Ashley neighborhood was the scene of an unthinkable crime last October. A young girl was shot as she slept in her bed. Five months later, investigators may be closer to putting someone behind bars.

Measuring his words in a recent interview, Charleston County Sheriff Al Cannon said that the investigation is progressing.

"We are still focused on that investigation and it is moving along," Sheriff Al Cannon said. "We feel very confident with some individuals in that case. And were waiting for some things with the federal government to take place."

The Griffor family was awakened in the wee hours of October 25, 2011 by shots being fired through their front door. Three days later, their five-year-old daughter, Allison, died at MUSC from injuries she suffered from being shot.

The Griffor family issued the following response to the annoucement of federal involvement and progress in the case:

"In the last few months following the murder of our precious Allison, we have tried our best to follow GODS path in hopes of finding some middle ground. In our walk allowing us to somehow move forward, secure in our positions, It's been a daily challenge. I have not even been able to secure a job to support my family in this economy. We went from a secure stable environment where we were very happy in both, our financial and family living positions, to that short second in the night that not only took our only daughter from our lives. It ripped our entire lives, shaking us to the ground, taking our daughter, our job,our home, our future...

Our oldest is finally able to go to the restroom by himself again but just cant seem to sleep in his own bed yet, due to his well founded fears.

I would be lying if I said it gets easier with time as it seems to get harder with these challenges which lay before us.

We are extremely grateful to the law enforcement and media. A special thanks to Sheriff Cannon & Detective Wilson whom are moving forward to capturing these child killers, hopefully before any more innocent lives are taken.

We are also very appreciative of all of our good friends behind the scenes, that still fight on our behalves to help change these laws and protect victims, not criminals and help to keep the area a little safer.

Thank You all for continued support.

The Griffors"
