CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- Why would anyone get up early and fight 40,000 people to run a 10K race across the massive Ravenel Bridge?

For one Lowcountry man,  it's been a dream.

"I was that person on the couch sitting at home just two years ago just dreaming. This is like a fantasy," said Bryan Ganey.

Two years ago, Bryan Ganey weighed nearly 600 pounds. He could barely walk, much less run six miles. His weight landed him in the hospital.

"I remember lying in the hospital two years ago and thinking about all the things I wanted to do," Ganey said. "The bridge run was always one of those things. It was always on that bucket list."

Bryan Ganey made it his mission to lose the weight. He refused surgery, opting instead for healthy eating and exercise. He believes there is no quick fix.

"You've got to think about the long term, because that's where the success is and the real happiness is, in the long term."

He took part in the bridge run last year, mostly walking.

"Last year I finished at 2 hours and 48 minutes. I was one of the last people in the race. They were right behind me with the bull horn, marking the end of the race."

Ganey spent the past year training for this year's run, and it showed.  He crossed the finish line smiling and sweating at a personal best of one hour and 49 minutes, shaving his time a full hour.

"Oh man, it's the greatest feeling in the world," he said. "I can't even describe it. I'm not even supposed to be here."

But he is here, and he plans to come back for more.

"I have to start training tomorrow for next year," he said.
