FOLLY BEACH, S.C. (WCIV) -- Officials say a deputy's cruiser crashed and caught fire Tuesday morning.

As a result, a section of Folly Road in the area of the intersection with Ellis Oak Drive was shut down for nearly six hours as crews completed cleanup of the deputy's cruiser.

A spokesperson with the South Carolina Highway Patrol says the Charleston County deputy was responding to a service call, lost control of the car, drove across the raised median, and collided with another car. The deputy was operating blue lights and sirens at the time.

The SCHP is still investigating how the deputy lost control of his vehicle.

Traffic was backed up all morning in both directions at the intersection of Ellis Oak Drive near the Harris Teeter Shopping Center.

Capt. Watson with the sheriff's office confirmed the deputy was transported to MUSC with injuries not believed to be life-threatening. According to EMS officials, he was the only party transported, and he was in stable condition.
