Strawberry Festival 'on hiatus'

Posted: Updated:

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (WCIV) -- Boone Hall's Lowcountry Strawberry Festival is "on hiatus" for 2012.

Touted by organizers at Boone Hall Plantation as one of the most popular events held in the South Carolina Lowcountry each spring, the festival is expected to be back next year.

The reason?

Boone Hall representatives say construction on Highway 17 would make it too difficult to get large numbers of vehicles on and off the highway.

Though the festival won't happen, you can still get your fill of berries. Rows upon rows of the U-Pick strawberry fields are open, berries ripe for the picking and larger than ever. Officials at Boone Hall say mild winter temperatures produced an earlier than normal strawberry crop with larger, sweeter berries.

The U-Pick fields are open Monday though Saturday, 9 a.m. until 6 p.m.
