MONCKS CORNER, S.C. (WCIV) -- A man accused of abusing his horses was sentenced Thursday.

Elizabeth Cannon, the assistant county attorney for Berkeley County said Dwight McCloud pleaded guilty to five of seven citations he was charged with last month.

He was fined $5,462.50.

McCloud pleaded guilty to two counts of failure to provide human care and treatment to an animal, one count of failure to provide adequate food and water and two counts of failure to provide treatment to a sick or injured animal.

The two remaining counts were continued for two weeks. Those counts apply to the horses still on McCloud's property. The horses will be monitored.

McCloud's second hearing is scheduled for April 19th.

Two horses rescued from McCloud have found a new home with the "Red Headed Stranger."

Country music legend Willie Nelson has agreed to adopt the horses, named Whisper and Traveler, and bring them to his ranch in Texas.

According to Nelson's website, he will use the rescued horses' story to "advocate for humane treatment of equines." Helping horses has been a cause of Nelson's for many years.

On March 1, Whisper and Traveler were rescued and brought to the Livestock and Equine Awareness and Rescue Network out in Meggett.

Whisper had toxic chemicals poured on his back and he was still burning when he was brought to the LEARN facility.

According to Nelson's website, the animals will not be moved until they have recovered.
