CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) – Braxton Kirby knows that he wants to go to the Citadel this fall, it's the only school he applied to. But this week's "Pre-Knob Program" is a chance to see what life will really be like when he starts taking classes this summer and attends the Citadel full time this fall.

"This is really important to me because I want to see what I am actually getting myself into as a core cadet when I come here," Braxton Kirby said. "I'm really excited to find out what I'll be getting myself into academically, physically and mentally."

The Pre-Knob Program is an opportunity for accepted students to observe the cadet lifestyle first hand. In addition to being partnered with a Knob host, pre-Knobs spend the night in the barracks, eat in the mess hall and attend classes.

"When I was walking around campus today seniors were coming out calling to us Pre-Knobs and I am just excited to see what all the hype is about," Braxton said.

Admissions Director Lt. Col. John Powell said they hold eight Pre-Knob events a year, but this is the largest one yet, with more than 165 students expected.

The Citadel also has the largest number of accepted female students this year. To date, the percentage of women attending the school is between seven and eight percent.

"We're always looking to raise the number of women enrolled here," Powell said.

He said the most important part of the program is for students to make sure they definitely want to attend the school.

"Typically what we find is they're either on one end of the spectrum or the other," Powell said. "They either say this is my school and vocation or they say this isn't for me and go somewhere else."

Parents of prospective students also have the opportunity to receive a special orientation program geared toward information on academics, Citadel resources and campus activities.

The Citadel Admissions Office also schedules individual visits for all prospective cadets and their families. These visits include an interview with an admissions officer and a cadet-guided campus tour. To make an appointment, call (800) 868-1842 and choose option #1 for the Office of Admissions.
