SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (WCIV) – Along the side of Highway 176 in Berkeley County, a cross and a part of a bicycle sits with the name ‘Ronnie' engraved in it. The memorial is for the Cane Bay High School senior who was hit by a car and died last year while he was riding his bike home.

The safety of the highway has been questioned since. Most of the wrecks are actually taking place a few miles from where Ronnie Gallardo was killed, on that same highway at the intersection of Cane Bay Boulevard.

There was one crash at the intersection last year where a Moncks Corner man was killed. Some drivers say accidents happen too often.

"It's getting really bad," Tom Tyner said.

Tyner drives on the road everyday and says it's only getting worse. Carol Nava, who says she also spends a lot of time at the intersection, mostly waiting for traffic to clear, says it's time for a traffic fix.

"The accidents prove that we really do need a traffic light," she said. "When the middle school is completed it's going to add to more traffic so they really, really need it."

Cane Bay Middle School, across from the high school on the boulevard, is expected to be completed this summer and its proximity is making some drivers question when they'll see the traffic light go up.

"We're constantly asking about it and told any day now, any day now, any day now. That's been going on now about a year," Tyner said.

Both county and school district officials say South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT), which is handling the project, plan to have it up by the end of the summer, before the middle school opens its doors.
