RIDGEVILLE, S.C. (WCIV)-- The Dorchester County Coroner's Office has confirmed that the 2-month old baby bitten by the family dog has passed away from his wounds.

"Today is one of the saddest days in my 20+ years of being in the Dorchester County Coroner's Office as I report to all of you, one of the worst deaths I have ever handled," said Coroner Chris Nesbit.

The Dorchester Sheriffs Office responded to a Sandpit Drive residence in Ridgeville around 11 a.m. Friday for reports of a child who had possibly lost his leg.

The coroner tells us that Aiden Lee McGrew, a 2 month old, born on Valentines day to Chantel and Quintin McGrew, was bitten multiple times and dismembered by a dog in the home while the mother was away and the father was sleeping.

The infant was transported in "category 1 condition" to Trident's Summerville Medical Center. Nesbit says two other children were in the home at the time of the incident but were not harmed.

The coroner will be doing an autopsy Saturday to hopefully be able to determine if the child died prior to the dismemberment.

The death is being investigated also by the Dorchester County Sheriffs Office.

At a press conference held Friday afternoon, Sheriff Knight stated that Chantel McGrew had taken their older child to the doctor, leaving Quintin McGrew home with a three-year-old and the two-month-old.

The sheriff said the father and the three-year-old were asleep in a bedroom when the attack happened. Knight says the mother told him the dog had recently been adopted.  The sheriff also said the family was dogsitting for someone, who didn't end up wanting the dog, so the family ended up keeping it.

The Department of Social Services has taken the other two children from the home.
