JAMES ISLAND, S.C. (WCIV) -- Where can you find 200 women in hard hats, with hammers, flexing their female muscles?

Sea Island Habitat for Humanity held its 12th women's build the second week of May on James Island.

"Our goal is to build a home primarily by women for a single mom," said communications coordinator Rhea Miller.

Sea Island was the first Habitat affiliate in South Carolina and the third oldest of nearly 3,000 worldwide. It's mission is to provide affordable housing for low income families on James, Johns, Wadamalaw and Edisto Islands.

"And to make decent housing a matter of conscience in our community," said Miller.

This month's build will benefit a single mother of two. Avis Williams has two sons, 11-year-old Dornell and 9-year-old Dionte.

"Avis is graduating from Trident Tech May 4th with her Associates Degree in Criminal Justice, and hopes to continue her education," said Miller.

So who's eligible for a home?

Miller says families must meet federal guidelines for income, show job stability, have good credit and more.

"They must be willing to put 500 hours of sweat equity on their home and in our ReStore."

As many as 200 volunteers are expected to come together Saturday May 5th through Saturday May 12th to make the dream of owning a home possible for a family.

But the volunteers get something too.

"Each build is memorable in its own way, but the most incredible aspect of each build is the camaraderie that develops among the volunteers, the empowerment that women feel as they work together and develop new skills and friendships," said Miller.

If you want to get involved it's easy to do. Just go to their website www.seaislandhabitat.org or call 843-768-0998.
