CHARLESTON, S. C. (WCIV)- The top four applicants in the running for the Charleston Fire Department's top spot will be under the microscope Monday.

Orientation and the interview process began at 8:30 Monday morning with a special meeting of city council.

Former Charleston fire chief Thomas Carr retired earlier this year due to complications from Parkinson's disease.

Carr joined the department in the wake of the devastating Sofa Super Store fire that killed nine Charleston firefighters in 2007.

He is credited with overseeing many advancements within the fire department.

"I know my decision will be a difficult one," said Charleston Mayor Joe Riley. "I look forward to the interview process and to enable the candidates to get acquainted with our outstanding community."

The group of three men and one woman vying to fill the vacant fire chief position were narrowed down from a list of 61 other applicants.

They are:

  • Paul J. Berardi, Deputy Fire Chief, Kansas City, MO
  • Karen E. Brack, Deputy Chief, Operations, Eugene, OR
  • Richard Brannon, Deputy Chief, Mobile, AL
  • Edwin W. Smith, Fire Chief, County of Henrico, VA

Each candidate brings no less than 25 years of experience to the table.

After meeting with city council, the applicants will have an opportunity to tour the city and some of the neighborhoods and visit a few of the city's fire stations.
