Crews search area off Hwy 61 in McCaffrey case

Posted: Updated:

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- They arrived at the plot of private property off Highway 61 at around 8 a.m. today. Boots on the ground with support from aircraft above, more than 150 people began combing the 100-acre area.

Among them, about 50 employees of The Citadel.

Marjorie Gayle McCaffrey was an employee of the military college. She was reported missing in March. On Wednesday of this week, Charleston County Sheriff Al Cannon said her case had been upgraded to a homicide investigation.

The search today is a search for clues in hopes of bringing the 36-year-old woman's family closure. It's a search for her body.

In a Wednesday press conference, Sheriff Cannon said cell phone activity is what led them to focus on the area. Cannon also said at the press conference that his agency is investigating Gayle's husband, Robert McCaffrey as a suspect in the homicide.

Christopher Lizzi, who is representing Robert McCaffrey, says investigators questioned his client after he reported her missing. Lizzi says there is no evidence to support Robert McCaffrey as being involved in Gayle McCaffrey's disappearance.

At a briefing to the press, Major James Brady with the Charleston County Sheriff's Office said that as of 2:30 p.m. nothing had been found.

We have a crew on the scene at the search. Check back with ABC News 4 as we continue to bring you the details of this story. Also be sure to watch our 6 p.m., 7 p.m. and 11 p.m. broadcasts.
