Coroner rules death of man found shot in liquor store a homicide

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- Officials with the Charleston County Coroner's Office have confirmed the death of 39-year-old Matt Renken to be a homicide.

Renken was found dead in the office of the Port City Liquors & Wines store on Dorchester Road on Monday, April 23.

His body was discovered by his stepfather. The stepfather immediately called 911.

Investigators say Renken had a single, fatal gunshot wound.

Officials with the coroner's office have not said exactly when Renken died but say it could have been any time the night before until early in the morning.

The North Charleston Police Department is still investigating the crime. On Friday afternoon, the department released the following statement:

"Detectives continue to investigate the death of Matthew Renken. At this time there is no lead on a suspect or suspects and Investigators ask that anyone that with information call Police or Crime Stoppers at 843-554-1111."

Investigators have released very little information in regards to Renken's death. They have said a handgun and phone were found near his body.
