The Avengers

To say The Avengers makes up for the huge number of cruddy action movies Hollywood has produced over the last decade would be an understatement.

Simply put, the combination of action, plot and humor in this movie is nearly perfect.

The Avengers, which is based from characters from Marvel Comics, has been in the making for years ... But, it has been well worth the wait.

The level of action and witty comedy the first Iron Man movie delivered in 2008 is amplified in The Avengers to the extreme.

What this movie does right, is even though it is nearly 2.5 hours long, it never bogs down with pointless dialogue and characters ... there is simply no time for it.

Also, the movie is not afraid to exploit the friction between the characters, and turn that into humor in unexpected moments. There are a number of scenes where perfectly-crafted one-liners had the audience in the packed theater I was in laughing out loud. The reason is because the movie does not take itself too seriously. Instead, the filmmakers delivered what everyone wanted to see in great super hero movie.

While it helps to have seen the previous build-up films which include Iron Man 1 and 2, Thor, Captain America and The Incredible Hulk ... it is not essential to enjoying the movie.

The reason the movie does not bog down, is because as soon as one character might start getting dull, they switch to what's going on with another character. This greatly adds to the action sequences, because you are not watching the same fighting over and over again ... till your eyes hurt.

This was one of the main issues with Transformers. While it was cool to see the giant robots fight, all of it was pretty much the same thing. So, the action eventually got monotonous over the span of the trilogy.

Instead, in The Avengers, Iron Man flies around and shoots rockets, Hulk smashes, of course, and Captain America is the heroic leader. The action is dynamic and keeps the movie interesting and fun. It even made me care about the characters I had never heard of like Black Widow and Hawkeye.

I have a co-worker who wants to take his young kid to see the movie, who said he was slightly nervous about swearing. Well not to worry, I only recall hearing "hell" once, and the action is not excessively violent for a PG-13 movie.

The movie also has a great ending, which includes a teaser of what is around the corner for The Avengers.

Hollywood has figured out a way to make the silliness of the super hero concept, and make it cool enough for fans to enjoy and smart/funny enough for everyone to enjoy.

The Avengers surpassed all my expectations of what a good popcorn-flick should be, and no doubt it is the most fun you will have at the movies this summer. But, I do hope the Dark Knight Rises will give it a run for its money.

For me The Avengers was perfect! Lowcountry Movie Night gives the movie 5 out of 5 stars!
