CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- Pink shirts and women hard at work.

That was the sight at the Sea Island Habitat for Humanity construction site this week. It was all part of the Women Build event, which brought women from different states and different parts of the Lowcountry together to help build a house for a local family.

"I really just wanted to do something to give back, and it seemed like a great organization," said Lauren Giesecke from Manchester, New Hampshire. "I thought it would be a good bonding experience with other people from a different area."

And it's an experience that the women will always cherish.

"For me personally to see the house from just the cinder block and then watch the walls go up, because I hadn't been in a project like that before, it's incredibly emotional," said Marian Muse, who lives in Boston, Massachusetts.

If you think that women aren't strong enough to build a house, then obviously you have forgotten about strength in numbers. This week, it's all about teamwork.

"It's important to learn teamwork and teamwork strategies and skill. Where one man might try and hang a full piece of plywood himself, women tend to get together and use teamwork as strength. It results in a better-finished product, and it's a lot safer as well," said Michael Rettaliata, site supervisor for Sea Island Habitat for Humanity.

And with all that hard work came plenty of sweat.

"We sweat a lot," said Giesecke.

But, all the ladies agreed that it was fun and rewarding.

"I feel so rewarded. Today is our last day, so today is so special, and I don't want it to end," said Muse.

The event will wrap up on Saturday, but the house won't be finished until July. The new homeowner is a single mom who recently graduated from Trident Tech with an associates degree in criminal justice.
