North Charleston pool facelift about saving lives

Posted: Updated:

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- It's about saving lives. That's the goal of the facelift soon to come to the Danny Jones Complex in North Charleston.

Through a joint effort with the City of Charleston, Town of Mount Pleasant and private revenue sources, about $1,375,000 has been set aside to fully enclose the facility, further develop its capability into a top-tier swimming center and host programs aimed at encouraging safe swimming practices and the foundation of a local swim community without boundaries.

It's the brainchild of Boeing VP Marco Cavazzoni, who also happens to be a former world-ranked swimmer.

"We saw a need in the community. We had an event... We saw a child drown," Cavazzoni said. "It's really all about preventing drownings."

It's an extra, Cavazzoni said, that there will be a new place for the Lowcountry's competitive swimmers to train. The facility will provide a pool length of 50 meters -- something Cavazzoni said is a need and cannot be found anywhere else in the area.

"We started to see a very good nucleus of athletes as swimmers in the Lowcountry that really don't have the facility, the 50 meter facility that is required to get to the next level -- the national, the international level. So, we started talking to different people in the community, and it really caught on," Cavazzoni said.

Currently there are several local, young competitive swimmers that compete on the national junior team. Cavazzoni said they likely underperform, because they train in shorter pools. The Lowcountry hosts plenty of talent, he says, there just needs to also be opportunity.

"If we can literally save one life, then we can all die happy people. That's what it's all about," he said.
