ORU Baseball Rolls To Series Win Over IPFW

Posted: Updated:

Oral Roberts University scored early and often on Sunday morning, blitzing Summit League rival IPFW by a 12-1 count at Mastodon Field. The game was called after seven innings with ORU up by more than ten runs.

Every starting position player tallied at least one hit for ORU (30-21, 14-5 Summit), including red-hot catcher Bennett Pickar, who tallied a team-high three hits.

Tim ZuFall (1-0) got his first Summit League start on Sunday and made the most of it, allowing just one run in five innings for the win. ZuFall struck out five.

Travis Reboulet (0-7) took the loss for IPFW after allowing 11 runs in 5.1 innings. The Mastodons are now 16-37 (8-16 Summit League) and eliminated from Summit League Tournament contention.

The Golden Eagles scored in each of the first five innings, with a three-spot in the 1st. Jared Schlehuber opened the scoring with a two-run double, and Brandon King followed with an RBI single to make the score 3-0.

ORU tallied single runs in both the 2nd and 3rd innings. A bases loaded walk to Cam Schiller and a Picker single pushed the lead to 5-0, and the best was yet to come for Rob Walton's team.

The Golden Eagles exploded for five runs in the 4th inning, putting the game out of reach. A Jose Trevino RBI single ignited the scoring explosion, and a Kevin Cho run-scoring hit made it 7-0. Nate Goro followed with a two-run single, and Logan Domenico added a run-scoring base hit to cap an inning that ended with the road side ahead, 10-0.

Schlehuber tacked on a run in the top of the 5th with a sacrifice fly, and IPFW scored their lone run in the bottom half on a Malcolm White single.

The final run came from Pickar, a 7th inning single to make the score 12-1. IPFW was unable to cut the lead under ten runs in the bottom of the 7th, and the game was halted.

Schlehuber tallied a team-best three RBI. While Pickar and Goro added two RBI each. Domenico, Schiller and King each collected to base hits.

Pickar was dominant in the series, batting 10-for-15 (.667) with a home run and 11 RBI. The ORU catcher had his best game of the season on Friday, with a grand slam and six RBI.

The Golden Eagles will close out the regular season this weekend with a four-game series against North Dakota State that is crucial to both team's Summit League regular season title hopes. The first pitch of Thursday's opener is scheduled for 6:30 pm CT.
