(Scott Garrand/WCIV)ISLE OF PALMS, S.C. (WCIV) – The Piccolo Spoleto Sand Sculpting Competition is just a few weeks away, but one local sand sculptor spent the day on the beach getting in all the practice he could while helping a local university.
The College of Charleston asked sand sculptor Jack Tracey to create a sculpture of their famous Randolph Hall.
A photographer captured the replica, and will use the image in an upcoming publication for the college.
Tracey said the Isle of Palms is the best place to perfect his craft.
"It's my favorite place to carve," Tracey said. "I've carved in other places, I've carved in construction sand and river sand and other beach sand but this sand is particularly good because it has the right combination of silt from the nearby rivers."
Luckily, the upcoming sculpting competition will be on Tracey's favorite beach. The contest is scheduled for June 2 at the Front Beach on IOP.
