SURFSIDE BEACH, S.C. (AP) -- A former Atlantic Beach police chief has been arrested and charged with drunken driving.

Police say 42-year-old Randy Rizzo was arrested early Sunday after an officer spotted a vehicle swerving in traffic several times.

A police report says Rizzo smelled of alcohol and had slurred speech.

The report says Rizzo refused to take three field sobriety tests. He also refused to take a breath test.

Rizzo was charged with DUI and failure to have proof of insurance.

He is scheduled to appear in court next month. It was not clear if he has an attorney;
