MOUNT PLEASANT, S. C. (WCIV)- Tropical storm Alberto may no longer be a threat to our coast but, it has many thinking of just how ready they are in case a hurricane comes ashore.

Though the 2012 hurricane season does not officially start until June 1, it's not too early for hurricane preparedness.

According to the National Hurricane Center, you should first consider a plan of action that will include putting together an emergency kit.

The kit should contain enough food for three days, water and other supplies needed for survival. Also, secure personal outdoor property that could be blown away: garbage cans, patio furniture, etc.

And because we live on the coast, boat owners should also determine how and where to secure their boats.

Most importantly, do not ignore warnings to evacuate. According to Naval Meteorology and Oceanography's David Titley, "If authorities tell you to go and you don't, you may really put yourself in jeopardy of either being stuck on roads or in traffic when the storm is coming, which is dangerous."

You should make yourself familiar with evacuation routes in your area so that you can move to higher ground quickly and safely.

Hurricane Preparedness Week runs May 27 through June 2.
