CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- First and second graders at Springfield Elementary School in West Ashley now have custom-made books to read -- written and illustrated by middle school students.

Seventh graders at West Ashley High School, under the direction of Samantha Gentrup, an ELA teacher, completed a service learning project in which they wrote and drew children's books.

"My students really believe in literacy and they love reading and writing. And, they wanted to share that with younger kids in our district. So, they actually worked in partners to write and illustrate children's books," said Gentrup, Tuesday afternoon after her students read their books to elementary students at Springfield.

The books had various subject matters and were bounded and typed by the students.
