Allison GrifforCHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- Officials with the Charleston County Sheriff's Office confirmed Wednesday afternoon that they believe the death of a 5-year-old that died after being shot while in her bed to be a case of mistaken target.
Major Jim Brady with the Charleston County Sheriff's Office said it has been believed for quite a while that the death of Allison Griffor was a home invasion meant for another target.
In late March, Sheriff Al Cannon said the investigation had progressed and that his office was "waiting for some things with the federal government to take place" before arrests can take place.
The Griffor family was awakened during the early-morning hours of October 25, 2011 by shots being fired through their front door. Three days later, Allison died at MUSC from injuries she suffered from being shot.
It's a situation that has taken a definite toll on the family.
"Our oldest is finally able to go to the restroom by himself again but just can't seem to sleep in his own bed yet, due to his well founded fears," said the Griffors in a written statement issued in March.
