NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- Each year thousands of graduating high school seniors walk across many stages in the Lowcountry to receive their diplomas.

On Saturday, a slightly different graduation was held to honor students who never left home to go to a classroom.

The Lowcountry Christian Educations Home Educators Association graduated 56 homeschooled high school seniors at Charleston Southern University's Lightsey Chapel.

Congressman Tim Scott spoke at the event, and also congratulated each student individually.

"What I am excited about is the quality of education that you receive through home schooling matches everything in our state," Scott said. "So it is a wonderful program, a wonderful opportunity for kids to get individualized attention, a strong academic foundation and also learn a lot about character and integrity along the way. It's a core part of the home school experience."

After walking across the stage to shake Congressman Scott's hand, each graduate then received their diplomas from their parents/teachers.

Scott said it was great to see the chapel packed with hundreds of people to see the 56 graduates honored.

The Lowcountry Christian Home Educators Association has more than 400 homeschooling families in the tri-county area.
