FOLLY BEACH, S.C. (WCIV)-- Folly Beach public safety, Charleston County Rescue and the US Coast Guard are responding to waters near the pier for a missing swimmer.

The Coast Guard confirms that the surf is so heavy, crews can not use a boat and are resorting to jet skis.

No details yet on the identity of the swimmer but officials with Folly Beach Public Safety say the swimmer is a middle aged man.

Officials say the swimmer went past the breakers and the lifeguard tried to rescue him but he did not resurface.

According to officials, a red flag warning has been in effect all day, meaning swimmers were warned to not go into the ocean above knee-deep.

The Coast Guard says they responded to nine rescue calls, including the drowning on Folly.

We will update this story as more details become available.
