New mountain bike trail aims to foster appreciation for the outdoors

Posted: Updated:

GOOSE CREEK, S.C. (WCIV) -- After six months of work and more than 1,000 volunteer hours, what is being described as a "ultimate mountain bike trail experience" has opened at Wannamaker Park.

Saturday marked the grand opening for the new 8-mile Wannamaker North Trail -- a trek that boasts rolling hills and sharp turns designed to keep experienced mountain bikers entertained.

While it's designed for mountain bikers, the course's designer says it has something for anyone wanting to get outside -- in the woods.

"It's also for runners and hikers," course designer Brad Phillips said.

Much more than a mountain bike course, it also provides a space for public events and races.

"It's awesome to finally have it open after all of the hard work all of the volunteers have put in. It's gonna be an ongoing process as the trail gets better and better every time. It's nice to finally have it out and get people out here riding it," Phillips said.

Officials with the Charleston County Park & Recreation Commission are equally as excited.

"We're very excited," said commission land resource manager Matt Moldenhauer. "This is our first single-track trail. A lot of the trails at our other parks are great, but they don't really appeal to more experienced mountain bikers."

The main goal, Moldenhauer said, is that visitors to the park and the trail foster an appreciation for the outdoors.

The development of the trail was made possible by a partnership between the Charleston County Park & Recreation Commission and the Lowcountry Fat Tire Freaks (a local mountain biking club).
