CAS needs food donations

Posted: Updated:

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- It's a huge problem, and those at the Charleston Animal Society say it is only getting worse.

As those in the Charleston area struggle with unemployment, the needs at the animal society for food donations increase.

For the past five years, the animal society has operated the Lowcountry Pet Food Bank. Now, the food bank is in jeopardy as the number people needing the service has tripled in the last four years.

"There have been times we have had to turn people away," said Charleston Animal Society director of community outreach, Kay Hyman.

The Charleston Animal Society needs your help. They need food donations for those who are currently unable to provide adequate food for pets. Hyman said what was once a service that saw a majority of participants being elderly men and women living on fixed incomes has now become something in which people of all walks of life are seeking help.

"We are starting to see younger people who have to utilize our food bank. People who were professionals; people who had six-figure jobs, even. These are people that have actually gone through their savings; have moved out of their own homes; lost their homes; moved in with relatives. Their pets are their last family, and they don't want to have to give them up."

In terms of donations, Hyman said the animal society is accepting anything they can get to help ease the burden.

"We need any food. The people who are getting this food are extremely grateful. ...They just need food for their pets, and any food is greatly appreciated," Hyman said.

The food bank is operated on Saturdays from 10 a.m. until noon.
