CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- About 4 a.m. Saturday morning, officers responded to a shots fired call in the Ardmore subdivision in the Yew Street area.
A teen was found laying on the ground outside his vehicle in the Famous Joe's Bar & Grill parking lot located at 1662 Savannah Highway.
Officials say he was shot. EMS transported him to MUSC where he later died.
The Charleston County Coroner's Office has identified the victim as 17-year-old Marley Lion of Johns Island. Deputy coroner Kimberly Rhoton says Lion died of a gunshot wound.
Lion was a recent graduate of Academic Magnet High School. He played basketball and lacrosse at the school.
Family members of Lion say he was driving home late Friday/early Saturday and decided to pull over on the side of the road and sleep. They say investigators told them he made a bed in the backseat of his car and was inside the car when someone approached and attempted to jimmy open the door.
They say Lion was shot in the head and died when he got to the operating room at MUSC.
Investigators are in the process of trying to identify suspect/suspects. They say two suspects may have been involved.
