Teen shot dead, community forced to cope

Posted: Updated:

CHARLESTON, SC (WCIV) -- The healing process will start this morning for a community shattered after the shooting death of a Johns Island teen.

Coastal Crisis Chaplaincy will be on hand at Academic Magnet High School, Lion's alma mater, to help with counseling as the school deals with the shooting death of 17-year-old Marley Lion during what is being called a botched robbery.

Friends and family say Lion drove his truck off the road, and instead of attempting to make the entire trip back to his house, decided to spend the night sleeping in the back of his truck. That's when Robert says things went wrong.

Lion was shot around 4 a.m. Saturday morning in a parking lot just off Savannah Highway near Famous Joe's. He later died at MUSC.

The Charleston police have confirmed that Lion was at a "house party" before the killing but would not provide any additional info on the party.

Lion was scheduled to make a court appearance Tuesday for a pending narcotics citation. He was charged with possession of 28g (1 oz) or less of marijuana or 10g or less of hashish, his first offense. He faced a fine of $620 for the minor charge.

Chaplains held counseling sessions Monday morning for students, faculty and parents who have been affected by the tragedy.

Visitation for Marley Lion is scheduled for Wednesday between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. at the St. James Episcopal Church Ministry Center located at 1872 Camp Road on James Island.  A memorial service will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. in the same location.

Investigators are still in the process of trying to identify the suspects. If you have any information you are asked to call Crime Stoppers at 843-554-1111.
