CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- Officials with the Charleston Police Department held a special press conference Tuesday.

Charleston Police Department spokesman Charles Francis said the press conference to be held by Chief Greg Mullen would be to address the two most recent homicide investigations in the City of Charleston.

Mullen appeared at the press conference with Charleston mayor Joseph Riley at his side. He described it as a "briefing" that would be used to separate fact from rumors circulating about the two cases. He began by announcing an arrest had been made in one of the cases.

The most recent of the two was the popular story of Academic Magnet graduate Marley Lion. Lion was found in the parking lot of Famous Joe's Bar and Grill with gunshot wounds and was taken to MUSC where he later died.

"I spent numerous days learning about him. This is exactly what it is. This has all characteristics of armed robbery turned murder," Mullen said.

He shared a video recording of the parking lot of Famous Joe's and said, "this is the best piece of evidence we have." Mullen said the teen did not deserve what happened to him. Mayor Riley stood near and pleaded for anyone with info to come forward. The mayor described the suspect as a "hoodlum."

Investigators say Marley Lion was in the neighborhood for 20 minutes before he was approached. They say they will not be releasing the type of gun used in the shooting.

The other recent death was the shooting of 23-year-old Maliek Byers that happened near Hanover and Reid Streets in downtown Charleston on June 14. Mullen said Joshua Robinson, AKA "Stacks," has been taken into police custody in connection with Byers' death. He's charged with murder and has a bond hearing scheduled for Wednesday.

Mullen said the motive in Byers' death was drug-related.

Anyone with information on either of the two crimes can call Crime Stoppers at 843-554-1111.
