CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- Charleston police are investigating a homicide at Crosstown and Line Street.

Charleston police say it happened around 12:45 a.m. Sunday morning.

According to a release by CPD, police responded to the area after dispatch received calls about shots fired in the area.

Officers arrived on scene and found the victim, a black male. He was pronounced dead at the scene by EMS. He was found lying across the elevated median of Highway 17 with several gunshot wounds.

The coroner has identified the victim as 22-year-old William Nelson of Charleston. He died from a gunshot wound.

According to an incident report provided by the Charleston Police Department, two small tubes (one purple, one orange) were found near his body. Officers say both contained a white powdery substance.

Sunday's death marked the seventh homicide in the City of Charleston this year. That's one more than this time last year.
