MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (WCIV) -- Summertime means an end to school. Suddenly, parents and children are spending much more time together. It can be a tricky transition for families.

Local parenting expert Bonnie Compton notes that it definitely calls for an adjustment. She suggests that parents include children in the process.

"Talk to your child," Compton said on Lowcountry Live. "Have the child involved in the decision-making process."

Compton said that summer activities are important. Ask your child what he/she would like to do. Not every child wants to attend summer camp. Volunteering could be a positive learning experience.

"You want it to be fun but also a learning opportunity," she said.

County websites and local magazines offer a great deal of information on camps, concerts, festivals and other activities. According to Compton, most children also like to give input on family destinations.

Compton said they also, believe it or not, enjoy spending time with their parents.
