NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCIV) -- Community centers have long caught-on throughout the city of North Charleston. From offering camps, to a place to keep cool, they make a major difference come summertime.

North Charleston encourages people to take advantage of the now 20 community centers within the city.

"We're just providing a space and service for citizens, young and old, for a place for them to recreate, where there is air conditioning, activities," said city recreation department program manager, Trish Elsie.

They provide summer programs for children of all ages and clubs for seniors. When the sun makes itself the biggest part of summertime, the centers can serve as a safe haven, or at the very least, a place to keep cool.

"If we as a city can provide them a gathering space for it, everybody wins in the long run," Elsie said.

Eighteen of the centers welcome kids on a daily basis, from June to August. There are 60 children in programs at Felix Pinckney. They do arts and crafts, academics and athletics. When you're talking 100 degree heat, of course pool time helps.

"We do have pool days incorporated in the program," said Robert Fludd of Felix Pinckney Community Center. "For our center, the pool days are Tuesdays and Thursdays."

Wednesday, swimmers were already packing the pool at the Danny Jones Complex. Officials expect the water to be even busier when the thermometer rises later this week.

The time spent outside is just as important as how the centers can be used for their indoor space, like at the brand new Thomas Evans Sr. Community Center.

"We have a large senior organization. We have different types of organizations, and it's available for all of them for use," said North Charleston Mayor, Keith Summey. "It will get a lot of use. We get a lot of action in every one we have."

They're sure to be action-packed all summer long.

The Danny Jones pool is open from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. during the week, and 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. on weekends.
