NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- Three years ago, Latesha Edwards tried to get her GED but, her plans were put on hold with the birth of her second child. Now, things are different. With determination and confidence she has finally achieved her goal.

"I procrastinated for a long time. I've always been a procrastinator, but I knew I wanted to do it but never gave myself that push," said Edwards.

Edwards is one of 20 single moms who graduated Wednesday night from the Mother to Mother program of Trident Literacy Association.

"She's only 26-years-old with three kids, step-kids you know? And, I am truly proud of her because in this life if you want something you have to go and get it because no one's going to give it to you, no one's going to bring it to you," said Dorothy L. Barron, Latesha's mom.

"It's a one-year program funded by the Sisters of Charity Foundation. And, we had eight core components; one was parenting, financial literacy, job opportunities, job shadowing, entering secondary education and obtaining GED and work certificates," said Felicia Holland, program manager of Mother to Mother.

Edwards says Holland helped encourage her to achieve her GED.

"To have a complete stranger, pretty much, who doesn't know anything about me, doesn't know my background or anything like that," said Edwards. "But, she came in, when you come in the group she's like, ‘I know you can do it', ‘I have faith in you', ‘you're going to do it'."

"I'm a mother myself and empowerment is the key," said Holland. "You know, you just need someone to give you that confidence and believe in you. And, I believe in them. And, I know that they can do it and they will succeed."

Wednesday's graduation could be the programs' first and last.

The program is funded by a $70,000 grant given by the Sisters of Charity Foundation. Officials have not yet said whether or not those funds will be set aside for the program next year.
