SULLIVAN'S ISLAND, S. C. (WCIV)- Revolutionary-sized events are planned Thursday commemorating a pivotal role South Carolina patriots played during the American Revolution.

Two hundred and thirty-six years ago on this day, patriots managed to hold off British navy vessels who were trying to enter the harbor to capture the city of Charleston.

After nine hours of battle, a British ship was sunk and many others in its fleet were damaged. The patriots had won.

Governor Nikki Haley has proclaimed June 28th, 2012 as 'Carolina Day' throughout the state and many events are planned.

On Sullivan's Island, Fort Moultrie will have free programs and demonstrations suitable for the entire family.

Other scheduled events include a 10 a.m. service at St. Michael's Church, located at 71 Broad Street in downtown Charleston.  A procession from Washington Park to White Point Garden begins at 11 a.m. followed by a wreath laying ceremony.
