SC police find 36 cats in apartment, woman evicted

Posted: Updated:

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (AP) - Myrtle Beach police have charged a 56-year-old woman with mistreatment of animals after they seized 36 cats from her apartment.

The Sun News of Myrtle Beach reported Thursday that Debra Susan Vroman was cited after her landlord reported she had too many cats and was being evicted.

A police report says none of the cats had current rabies shots or had been seen by a veterinarian. Police say Vroman asked to keep some of the cats, but gave them all to animal control officers to be taken to the Humane Society for care.

Officers told Vroman she would have to ask a judge if she wants any cats back, and agree to spay or neuter them and provide proper medical care.
