Thunder Front Office Discusses Draft Choice

Posted: Updated:

When a team is as talented as they are young in respect to playing in the NBA, the league draft becomes mostly about drafting for value as opposed to need.

The Thunder's lone pick in Thursday night's NBA Draft epitomized a choice of "value" when Oklahoma city selected Baylor forward Perry Jones III with the 28th selection.

Even Oklahoma City Thunder Execute Vice President and General Manager Sam Presti admitted, "We didn't enter this draft thinking that Perry Jones would be there at 28 for us."

What Presti described as a "meniscus issue" in one of Jones' knees made a projected lottery pick fall close to the end of the first round.

This pick benefits the Thunder organization and Perry Jones III for several different reasons.

For Oklahoma City, it's having yet another well-rounded talent which can mesh in a system that openly values versatility. It also gives the Thunder a contingency plan should negotations fall through with shot-block forward Serge Ibaka's extension.

And there's no rush on the potential recovery and early development of Jones III. If his undisclosed condition ultimately justifies almost every team from drafting "PJ3" in the first round, the Thunder aren't in need of his immediate services.

In hindsight, it may prove to be the smartest pick in the draft outside Anthony Davis going first overall to New Orleans.
