NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- An officer stepped out of his cruiser to check someone out and moments later ended up shot.

A spokesperson for the North Charleston Police Department says the officer was hit in the lower portion of his bullet resistant vest. Officials say the officer did not suffer life threatening injuries, is alert and was taken to an area hospital to be checked out.

According to the CPD, Sergeant Eddie Bullard, a 15 year veteran of the department, will remain in the hospital for overnight observation and is expected to be released Thursday.

Officials say the shooting happened just before 5 a.m. near 6929 Rivers Avenue. A heavy police presence remains near the Carpet Wholesalers business.

Police don't have much of a description of the suspect other than a black male wearing black clothing.
