Are you missing your pet?

Posted: Updated:

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- Each year, the Charleston Animal Society experiences one of its busiest days on July 5th. This year was no different.

The North Charleston shelter received 30 stray animals by mid-afternoon Thursday. The shelter says the animals were most likely scared by 4th of July fireworks and ran off.

As of Thursday evening, at least eight of those animals had been returned to their homes.

"It's horrific when you lose your pet," said Kay Hyman of the Charleston Animal Society. "They're a part of the family. I know people who stayed up all night last night looking for their dogs, and it can be very devastating to a family."

The Charleston Animal Society is using this time as a reminder to all pet owners to take the necessary precautions to prevent this from happening again. They say to keep pets comfortable and at home during loud celebrations like July 4th.

If you're missing your pet, the best thing to do is visit local shelters with a picture and description of your animal. You can also email the Charleston Animal Society a picture of your pet.
